PINDUS CROSSING ADVENTURE TREK
A Six-Day Trekking Adventure
Across the Wild Heart of Greece
Six days of trekking through the heart of the Northern Pindus Mountains. A shared mountain adventure across one of Greece’s wildest, most authentic and least-explored landscapes.
The PINDUS CROSSING returns for its 7th consecutive year, following an extraordinary journey from Metsovo to Konitsa. Ancient forests, alpine lakes, wild rivers, high mountain summits and historic Vlach villages shape a journey of approximately 120 km through the heart of Greece’s mountain wilderness.
But PINDUS CROSSING 2027 is much more than a long-distance mountain traverse. It is a six-day trekking adventure and a celebration of mountain life. We hike through the mountains during the day and reunite each afternoon in the villages of Pindus — to enjoy local food, rest, share stories and spend time together before setting off for the next destination the following morning.
Discover Pindus Your Way
This year’s PINDUS CROSSING gives you the freedom to experience the mountains your way and at your own pace. Each day, you can choose:
- PINDUS DISCOVERY — shorter hikes of 8–15 km, accompanied by our mountain guides
- PINDUS CHALLENGE — longer routes of 15–25 km, accompanied by our mountain guides
- PINDUS ELITE — longer routes of 15–25 km for experienced hikers who prefer to travel independently, without a guide
- PINDUS REST DAY — take a day off from hiking and enjoy one of the mountain villages along the route at a slower pace
From Metsovo to Konitsa
Our journey begins in Metsovo and travels through Aoos Lake, Mavrovouni, Flega, Arkoudorema, Vovousa, Distrato, Samarina, Mount Smolikas, Pades, the Dragon Lake of Tymfi and Astraka, before reaching Konitsa six days later — after crossing a remarkable section of the Northern Pindus Mountains.
You don’t have to hike all 120 km to experience the full spirit of PINDUS CROSSING. Choose your route, your distance and the days you want to hike. Whatever option you choose, we come together again each afternoon at the next stop along our journey.
Choose your way to experience the Pindus Mountains and reserve your place on PINDUS CROSSING 2027!

In its 7th consecutive year, the PINDUS CROSSING is one of Greece’s most spectacular multi-day trekking adventures — an unforgettable journey through the remote mountain landscapes of the Northern Pindus Mountains.
This is a side of Greece few international travellers ever get to experience. Ancient forests, rushing mountain rivers, crystal-clear springs and traditional villages lie beneath dramatic limestone peaks and towering cliffs — scenery that, at times, feels more like the Dolomites than the Mediterranean. Wild, remote and remarkably unspoilt, Northern Pindus is one of the great wilderness regions of Greece.
Over six days, participants can cover between 60-120 km, depending on the route options they choose. Our journey links Metsovo, Aoos Lake, Mavrovouni, Flega Lakes, Arkoudorema, Vovousa, Distrato, Samarina, Mount Smolikas, the Dragon Lake of Smolikas, Pades, Vrysochori, Neraidovrysi, the historic Klepht hideouts, Karteros Pass, Gamila I, Astraka Mountain Refuge, the Dragon Lake of Tymfi, Davalista, Stomio Monastery and the Aoos River, before finally reaching Konitsa.
Travel light, hike free. Your main luggage is transferred between overnight stops by our support vehicles, allowing you to enjoy each day’s trek carrying only a light daypack with the essentials — water, snacks, waterproof jacket, sun hat, sunglasses and personal items.
Accommodation is part of the Pindus experience. In Metsovo, Distrato and Samarina, we stay in local hotels and traditional guesthouses, using twin, triple or four-bed rooms. In the more remote locations of Vovousa, Pades and Astraka, where tourism infrastructure is limited, we stay in mountain refuges with shared dormitory accommodation for approximately 6–12 people.
When completing your registration form, you can customise your PINDUS CROSSING experience day by day, choosing a different option for each stage of the journey:
- PINDUS DISCOVERY — Guided trekking, 8–15 km per day
- PINDUS CHALLENGE — Guided trekking, 15–25 km per day
- PINDUS ELITE — Self-guided trekking, 15–25 km per day
- PINDUS ELITE RACE — Self-guided trekking, 15–25 km per day, with a competitive race format
- PINDUS REST DAY — Optional recovery day
- PINDUS SUPPORTER — Join the PINDUS CROSSING experience without hiking
Good to Know
1. Flexible participation
Your selected option is not fixed for the entire crossing. If you experience fatigue, injury or another unexpected issue, you may switch from one trekking option to another, even if you originally selected something different on your registration form. Simply inform the event team in good time on the previous day.
2. Guided groups
For PINDUS DISCOVERY and PINDUS CHALLENGE, the standard guide-to-participant ratio is approximately 1 guide for every 10 hikers.
Private guiding arrangements — such as 1:1 or 1:2 — may also be available at an additional cost. Please contact us well in advance, as availability is limited.
3. PINDUS ELITE
PINDUS ELITE is designed for experienced and physically fit hikers who are comfortable travelling independently in mountain terrain.
Participants must have good navigation skills and be confident using GPS navigation and digital mapping apps on a smartphone (such as Avenza Maps or similar applications).
4. PINDUS ELITE RACE
PINDUS ELITE RACE adds a competitive dimension to the long-distance route. Participants are individually timed on each stage, with the overall classification determined by their combined time across the course.
Awards and medals are presented to the top three men and top three women in the overall classification.
5. PINDUS REST DAY
Need a break? Choose a PINDUS REST DAY on one or more stages. You will travel with our support transport to the next overnight destination and have the rest of the day free to relax, explore the village and recharge for the stages ahead.
6. PINDUS SUPPORTER
PINDUS SUPPORTER is available to a limited number of friends or companions who would like to be part of the PINDUS CROSSING experience without taking part in the trekking routes.
Supporters travel with our support transport to the next overnight destination and have free time to explore and enjoy the area until the hikers and racers arrive.
You won’t need to carry all your gear while trekking. Your main luggage and anything you don’t need during the day will be transferred by our Mountain Bus and 4×4 support vehicles from the start to the finish of each day’s route, ready for you when you arrive.
What to Wear While Trekking
July in the Pindus Mountains generally calls for lightweight summer trekking clothing. During the day, we recommend:
• Trekking shorts or lightweight trekking trousers
• Lightweight synthetic T-shirt or trekking shirt
• Hiking boots or sturdy trekking shoes
• Trekking poles
Mountain weather can change quickly, so additional layers and weather protection should always be carried in your daypack.
What to Carry in Your Daypack
A 25–35 L daypack is ideal. As a general guide, you should carry:
- Water bottle or flask — 1–1.5 L
- Trail snacks — nuts, energy bars, sandwiches, etc.
- Fleece or warm mid-layer
- Lightweight windproof/waterproof jacket
- Sun hat or cap
- Sunglasses
- Sunscreen and SPF lip balm
- Headlamp
- Map, compass and/or GPS — optional
- Personal first-aid kit
- Swimsuit and a small towel
Gear Transported by Our Support Vehicles
The rest of your personal equipment will travel separately with our support team and will be waiting for you at the end of each stage:
- Spare trekking and casual clothing
- Trainers or comfortable shoes
- Sandals or flip-flops
- Towel
- Personal toiletries
- One set of bed linen and a pillowcase
- Sleeping bag for mountain-refuge nights — optional
- Sleeping-bag liner — optional
Travel light during the day — we take care of the rest.
For trekking in the Pindus Mountains in July, choose lightweight, breathable and quick-drying clothing designed for warm-weather hiking.
For your upper body, we recommend synthetic technical T-shirts, either short- or long-sleeved, or lightweight trekking shirts. Avoid heavy cotton clothing, as technical fabrics manage moisture better and dry much faster.
For your lower body, lightweight trekking trousers or hiking shorts are ideal. Comfortable outdoor or athletic trousers can also be used.
Footwear
For most stages of the PINDUS CROSSING, good-quality trail-running shoes or lightweight hiking boots are the best choice. Hiking boots offer additional ankle support and protection on rocky, muddy or overgrown sections of the trail and can provide better protection in wet conditions.
Trekking poles are optional, but highly recommended, particularly for longer stages and sections involving significant ascent or descent.
A Second Pair of Shoes
Bring a second pair of comfortable footwear in addition to your trekking shoes or boots. Lightweight trainers or outdoor sandals such as Teva-style sandals are ideal for relaxing at the mountain refuges and guesthouses, exploring the villages in the evening or travelling on the Mountain Bus.
After a long day on the trail, your feet will appreciate the change

Food is part of the Pindus experience. Along our journey, the mountain villages offer plenty of opportunities to enjoy traditional Greek food in local tavernas and family-run restaurants, either for lunch or dinner. Astraka Mountain Refuge, where we spend the final night of the trek, also has an organised kitchen serving meals to hikers.
During each day’s trek, you only need to carry light trail snacks such as energy bars, nuts, dried fruit or sandwiches, together with approximately 1–1.5 litres of water. Depending on the stage, you will have opportunities to refill in villages and at natural mountain springs along the route.
Meals
Breakfast at our accommodation is included. All other lunches and dinners are paid for individually by participants and are not included in the package price.
Drinks — including bottled water, soft drinks, coffee and alcoholic beverages — are also not included.
This gives you the freedom to choose where and what you would like to eat each day and, of course, the opportunity to discover the local cuisine of the Pindus mountain villages.
Water
There is no need to carry excessive amounts of water on most stages of the PINDUS CROSSING.
With the exception of Day 5, the daily routes normally pass two or three natural mountain springs, where you can refill your bottle with fresh drinking water.
For most trekking days, carrying approximately 1–1.5 litres at a time is therefore sufficient. Before each stage, our guides will brief the group on the available water sources and the recommended amount of water to carry for that particular route.

The Trek
After an early breakfast in Metsovo, we leave by Mountain Bus for the highlands surrounding Aoos Lake, where the first trekking stage of PINDUS CROSSING begins.
For PINDUS CHALLENGE, PINDUS ELITE & PINDUS ELITE RACE, the route starts on the shores of Aoos Lake and climbs towards Mavrovouni Refuge. From there, we continue to the summit of Mavrovouni (1,997 m). Leaving the summit, the route descends off-trail through a beautiful high-altitude landscape dotted with centuries-old Bosnian pines, before reconnecting with the main trail towards Flega.
The PINDUS DISCOVERY group begins higher, from Pade la Laklou Lake (1,880 m), following a shorter route towards Flega Summit (2,157 m).
The routes eventually merge on the ascent to Flega, and from this point all groups follow the same trail.
From the summit of Flega, one of the finest viewpoints of the Northern Pindus, the panorama opens across Aoos Lakeand the great mountain ranges of the region — Smolikas, Tymfi, Nemertsika and Vasilitsa among them.
We then descend towards the beautiful twin alpine lakes of Flega, lying just below the summit at approximately 1,950 m and 1,920 m. From the lakes, the trail drops deeper into the wilderness towards Arkoudolakkos and the crystal-clear waters of Arkoudorema.
Here, surrounded by forest and steep mountain slopes, natural pools and small waterfalls offer the perfect opportunity for a refreshing swim — one of the most memorable spots along the entire crossing.
The final section leads through dense forests of beech, maple and pine, passing mountain streams and natural springs before reaching the confluence of the Arkoudorema and Aoos rivers. From here, we follow the Aoos through the forest until we reach Valia Calda Refuge, near Vovousa, where our first long day in the mountains comes to an end.

The Trek
Our second trekking day takes us deeper into the Northern Pindus Mountains, following sections of two important long-distance trails: the E6 European Long-Distance Path, which crosses the Greek mountains from west to east, and the Pindus Trail, which follows the backbone of the Pindus mountain range.
For the longer routes, we leave Valia Calda Refuge and follow the Aoos River for approximately 4 km to the beautiful mountain village of Vovousa. From the village, the route continues for another 5–6 km along a forest road beside the river before entering Valia Stathi, one of the hidden natural treasures of the region and part of the habitat of the European brown bear.
The PINDUS DISCOVERY group begins its trek from Vovousa and follows the route through Valia Stathi. At the far end of the valley, where the trail meets a forest road, the Discovery route comes to an end. From here, participants are transferred to Distrato by 4×4 support vehicles.
The PINDUS CHALLENGE, PINDUS ELITE and PINDUS ELITE RACE routes continue on foot towards Distrato. From Valia Stathi, the trail climbs steeply through dense forest on the slopes of Mytiko, eventually reaching a distinctive mountain pass with panoramic views across the Aoos River valley.
After a final short ascent, we cross a wooded saddle and begin descending along the northern side of the mountain towards the small chapel of Agia Sotira, passing a natural spring along the way.
From Agia Sotira, only a final 15-minute walk remains before we arrive at the central square of Distrato (1,020 m) — a traditional mountain village surrounded by the forests and high peaks of Northern Pindus.

10:30 — Start of PINDUS DISCOVERY
The Trek
Today’s route takes us through one of the wildest and most remote areas of Northern Pindus, crossing from the historic region of Epirus into Western Macedonia, where the mountain village of Samarina is located.
The trail winds through magnificent forests of towering black pine and centuries-old Bosnian pine, whose weather-shaped trunks create some of the most distinctive landscapes of the Pindus Mountains.
As we traverse the slopes of Gomara, west of the Vasilitsa massif, views open towards Mount Smolikas and the legendary Valia Kirna — the “Valley of the Devil” — a place deeply connected with the traditions and stories of the Vlach communities of Samarina and Distrato.
After several hours on the trail, we reach the Samarina River, where there is time for a refreshing swim in its cool mountain waters. From here, we climb towards the small chapel of Metamorfosi tou Sotiros and the old Agia Paraskevi Monastery.
The PINDUS DISCOVERY route finishes at Agia Paraskevi. Participants are then transferred by Mountain Bus to Samarina.
The PINDUS CHALLENGE, PINDUS ELITE and PINDUS ELITE RACE groups continue on foot from Agia Paraskevi. The trail initially follows a well-defined route with gentle gradients before becoming steeper and rougher on the final approach to Samarina (1,440 m).
Set high in the Pindus Mountains, Samarina marks the end of another memorable stage of our crossing and provides the perfect mountain setting to rest, enjoy the village and prepare for the next day’s adventure.

The Trek
Today is one of the most demanding and spectacular stages of PINDUS CROSSING, taking us high into the alpine world of Mount Smolikas and, for the longer routes, all the way to its 2,637 m summit — the second-highest mountain in Greece after Mount Olympus.
The PINDUS CHALLENGE, PINDUS ELITE & PINDUS ELITE RACE groups start early from the central square of Samarina. We climb through forests of black pine and centuries-old Bosnian pine before emerging into the vast alpine meadows of Smolikas.
Continuing higher, the route passes beneath the rugged peaks of Mikri and Megali Mosia and crosses an impressive high-altitude landscape of natural depressions, springs and open alpine terrain. At around 2,500 m, a traversing mountain trail leads across scree slopes towards the highest point of the massif.
After approximately 7–8 hours of trekking, we reach Smolikas Summit — “Geros” (2,637 m).
From the summit, the panorama is extraordinary. Across the horizon rise the great mountain ranges of Northern Greece, including Tymfi (Gamila), Trapezitsa, Grammos and Nemertsika, with views extending towards the Greek–Albanian border.
After the classic team-photo on the summit, we begin our descent towards one of the most magical places in the Pindus Mountains: the Dragon Lake of Smolikas (2,150 m).
Known locally as Drakolimni “Lyga”, this beautiful alpine lake is one of the few of its kind in Greece and provides habitat for the protected Alpine newt. Surrounded by high mountain terrain, it is one of the natural highlights of the entire PINDUS CROSSING.
The PINDUS DISCOVERY group approaches the Dragon Lake from the opposite direction. After travelling by Mountain Bus from Samarina to Pades, participants climb from the village to the lake before returning along the same route — a demanding but spectacular 12 km mountain trek with 1,000 m of ascent and descent.
After enjoying the Dragon Lake, the longer-route groups continue downhill on a well-defined trail through pine forest towards Pades (1,150 m), reaching the village after approximately three more hours of descent.
At Pades, all groups reunite at Munti Smolikas, where we spend the night beneath the mountains we have just crossed.

The Trek
Today brings one of the most spectacular and demanding mountain stages of the entire PINDUS CROSSING, crossing the dramatic alpine landscape of the Tymfi massif and reaching its highest summit, Gamila I (2,497 m).
For the longer routes, our trek begins in Vrysochori (940 m), beneath the imposing cliffs of Tsouka Rossa. The trail traverses the mountainside through extraordinarily rich forest towards Neraidovrysi, with occasional sections following rough forest tracks.
The scenery soon becomes spectacular. Far below lies the densely forested Aoos River valley, while across the valley rises Mount Smolikas — the mountain we crossed only the day before.
At approximately 1,300 m, the trail turns south and begins climbing towards the high mountain terrain of Tymfi. As we gain altitude, the forest gradually thins and gives way to the open alpine landscape.
We continue towards the historic Klepht Hideouts and then climb towards Karteros Pass (2,260 m), the dramatic gateway to the southern side of the massif.
From here, the character of the landscape changes completely. Towering limestone cliffs, the imposing peaks of Mavra Litharia, deep glacial basins and patches of snow that can survive well into summer create an unexpectedly alpine world — a landscape that has earned this part of Pindus the nickname “the Greek Alps.”
From Karteros Pass, the route follows the high ridge towards the summits of Tymfi and reaches Gamila I (2,497 m), the highest point of the massif.
The panorama from the summit is one of the great rewards of PINDUS CROSSING. From here, we descend back into the vast alpine landscape of Tymfi and continue towards Astraka Pass, where Astraka Mountain Refuge (1,950 m) stands in a spectacular position beneath the surrounding limestone peaks.
PINDUS DISCOVERY
The Discovery group enjoys a completely different but equally memorable day.
After travelling to Iliochori, we take a short walk to the village’s beautiful waterfalls, with time for a refreshing swim in their natural pools.
We then continue by Mountain Bus to Mikro Papigo (970 m), one of the best-known traditional stone villages of the Zagori region. After a light lunch, we begin the approximately 6 km ascent to Astraka Mountain Refuge, gaining almost 1,000 vertical metres as the trail climbs from the village into the alpine world of Tymfi.
By the end of the day, all groups reunite at Astraka Mountain Refuge (1,950 m) for our final night high in the mountains.

The Final Trek
Our final day begins high in the alpine landscape of Tymfi, with one last spectacular journey through the mountains before completing the PINDUS CROSSING on the banks of the Aoos River in Konitsa.
From Astraka Mountain Refuge, the trail initially descends into Tsoumani Basin before climbing towards one of the iconic natural landmarks of the Pindus Mountains — the Dragon Lake of Tymfi (2,050 m).
Standing beside the crystal-clear alpine lake, we enjoy magnificent views towards the dramatic limestone walls and summit of Gamila I (2,497 m), reflected in the waters of the lake.
After time to enjoy the silence and extraordinary alpine setting, the routes separate.
PINDUS DISCOVERY
The Discovery group returns along the same trail to Astraka Mountain Refuge, where we stop for coffee, a snack and some well-earned rest.
We then begin the long descent to Mikro Papigo (970 m). On arrival in the village, we board the Mountain Bus and travel to Konitsa Bridge, where we reunite with the other groups on the banks of the Aoos River.
PINDUS CHALLENGE | PINDUS ELITE | PINDUS ELITE RACE
From the Dragon Lake, the longer routes continue uphill to the nearby Dragon Lake Summit (2,130 m) before beginning one of the most dramatic descents of the entire journey.
The trail drops steeply towards the forested Davalista Ridge and continues down to the historic Stomio Monastery, spectacularly located above the Aoos Gorge.
After a short visit to the monastery, we follow the trail beside the Aoos River for the final section of the journey.
Eventually, the historic Konitsa Bridge comes into view — the finishing point of our six-day crossing of the Northern Pindus Mountains.
PINDUS CROSSING complete.
Here, all groups reunite for a refreshing swim in the crystal-clear waters of the Aoos and time for a final meal at a traditional local taverna — the perfect way to celebrate the end of our mountain journey.
Return to Athens
16:00 — Departure from Konitsa for Athens by Mountain Bus
The return journey includes rest stops in Ioannina, Evinochori and Haidari, following the same route as on our outward journey.
23:00 — Arrival at Karaiskaki Square, Athens.
End of programme.
